Kennedy Refuses to Attack Trump, Thanks Him for Kind Words: ‘I’m Proud That President Trump Likes Me’

June 29, 2023: Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. refused to attack Donald Trump and thanked the former president for calling him a “common-sense guy” during a town hall hosted by News Nation.

When asked by moderator Elizabeth Vargas what he thinks of Trump, Kennedy refused to attack the former president despite the Democratic Party’s overwhelmingly negative view. “Here’s what I’m not going to do in this race. I’m not going to attack other people personally. What I’m trying to do in this race is being people together,” Kennedy said. He later went a step further and thanked the Trump for recent kind words. I’m proud that President Trump likes me,” Kennedy said.

Trump most recently praised the Democratic candidate during an appearance on the Howie Carr Show earlier this week. “Just hang in,” Trump said of Kennedy, "He’s been very nice to me, I’ve actually had a very nice relationship with him over the years. He’s a very smart guy, and a good guy.”

“He’s a common-sense guy and so am I. So, whether you’re conservative or liberal, common sense is common sense,” he added.

During Wednesday’s town hall, Kennedy also said that he “likes” President Biden even though he disagrees with him on a number of policy fronts. The presidential hopeful went on to again tell Vargas that he wants to see more unity in the country. “We’ve got to stop hating on each other,” he said.

Kennedy — the nephew of former President John F. Kennedy — has consistently proven to be a thorn in the side of President Biden and the Democratic National Committee. He has polled between 10 and 20 percent and garnered support from a number of disgruntled Democrats, including former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and Alicia Silverstone.

Despite continued interest in his campaign, the DNC has refused to schedule a debate between Biden, Kennedy, and other candidates, including Marianne Williamson and Cornel West.

Kennedy has also been floated as a potential vice-presidential option if former President Trump wins the GOP nomination. Former Trump White House advisor and War Room host Steve Bannon has called on Trump and Kennedy to join together for a “unity ticket” in 2024. “Bobby Kennedy would be an excellent choice for Trump to consider,” Bannon said during a War Room episode this past April.

Kennedy has thrown cold water on the idea as of this point in time, though it remains to be seen what the future holds given the cordial relationship between the two.
